Health & Safety
Policy Statement
“To provide a safe and healthy workplace for the benefit of all the stakeholders in our business, including customers, employees, suppliers and shareholders”
HAS Committees
Each Branch of Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc has a Health and Safety Committee that meets on a monthly basis. Each committee is made up of a cross section of plant employees, office staff and management. These meetings help ensure the proper implementation and ongoing enforcement of the health and safety program at Wilkinson Steel.
Safety Manual
The major elements of our Health and Safety Manual include:
|
|
Modified Duties Program
Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc considers no phase of our operations to be more important than the well being of our most valuable asset, our employees.
When an employee suffers illness or injuries that result in absence from the workplace, not only is the employee’s personal life affected, but also the entire organization suffers as a result of the individual’s inability to contribute.
To hasten a disabled employee’s return to work, or to keep the employee on the job, Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc will make every attempt possible to provide
meaningful modified work duties to assist in rehabilitation and restoration to normal, healthy and productive work duties.
WHMIS
It is the policy of Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc that special precautions be taken when using, handling, storing and disposing of hazardous chemicals. Both general and specific training are required for those workers who work with, or in close proximity to, hazardous chemicals. Fulfilling the requirements for chemicals as defined in the WHMIS regulations will ensure that all potential hazards associated with the use, handling, storage and disposal of chemicals are identified, eliminated or minimized.
Certificate of Recognition
Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc joined the Partners in Industry Reduction Program through the Manufacturers’ Health and Safety Association. After becoming a member, Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc obtained a Certificate of Recognition in Health and Safety in 2002. This includes our Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurrey branches. This commitment has assisted us growing our Health and Safety Management System along with our own employee commitment to a Safe and Healthy Workplace.
Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc maintains a company wide Health and Safety program based on the COR program including regular Safety Audits and inspections in all of our facilities. We are actively pursuing the development of similar certification programs with the Workers Compensation Boards of British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
